Cover photo: Witness to the Crowd. A man raises his phone above a large gathering on Avenida Paulista, recording the demonstration taking place before him. Beyond his outstretched arm, the crowd extends toward a historic building framed by the avenue’s trees. The Act of Looking is a 14-image black-and-white photographic series documenting a public demonstration on Avenida Paulista on 11 October 2026. The work is concerned with acts of witnessing and participation: people raising placards, taking photographs, and moving through public space against the city’s distinctive architecture.
Beneath the Avenue. A quiet stretch of road curves beneath Avenida Paulista, framed by concrete walls, parked vehicles, and the city’s trees above. Away from the crowds, the photograph observes São Paulo through its layers of infrastructure and movement. An ordinary urban passage becomes a study of perspective, architecture, and the spaces people pass through without noticing. Photo: Neil Wildin.A City Gathered. A dense crowd fills Avenida Paulista, with flags and banners rising above the gathering beneath a pedestrian overpass marked by the city. The photograph captures the scale of a political demonstration through the people occupying the street. Individual identities merge into a larger collective presence, revealing the relationship between public space, participation, and the city’s energy. Photo: Neil Wildin.Voices Beneath the Trees. Political flags cross a crowd gathered in front of a historic building on Avenida Paulista. The older architecture, surrounding trees, and participants form contrasting layers in the composition. A moment in which the city’s architectural memory becomes the backdrop for contemporary political expression. The photograph records the interaction between people, symbols, and the public spaces they temporarily occupy. Photo: Neil Wildin.Above the Crowd. Flags cut diagonally across the frame as demonstrators gather shoulder to shoulder beneath the glass façades of São Paulo’s business district. At the center of the scene, a participant rises above the surrounding crowd. The movement of fabric, gestures, and bodies creates a composition shaped by the energy of the demonstration. A study of collective presence and the visual language of political demonstrations. Photo: Neil Wildin.Raising the Flag. Above a tightly packed crowd, demonstrators raise flags against the geometric backdrop of an urban building. The photograph isolates a moment of physical effort and public expression, with raised arms and moving fabric drawing attention away from the surrounding activity. An observation of how gestures and symbols become focal points in a larger gathering. Photo: Neil Wildin. The Message. A demonstrator holds a handwritten political sign above their head as people gather and move along the sidewalk of Avenida Paulista. The sign becomes the visual center of the photograph, surrounded by overlapping gestures, expressions, and street movement. An observation of individual expression within a collective demonstration, where handwritten words compete with the noise and scale of the city. Photo: Neil Wildin. The View from Within. Seen from behind, a participant raises a phone to photograph the demonstration stretching along Avenida Paulista. Tall buildings, trees, and crowds gathered along the avenue recede into the distance, creating a layered portrait of urban density and collective activity. Rather than looking directly at the photographer, the central figure looks beyond the frame, drawing attention to the shared act of observing and recording the same moment. Photo: Neil Wildin.Symbols in the Street. Political banners and flags converge on a tree-lined stretch of Avenida Paulista, carried by demonstrators moving along the busy sidewalk. The photograph captures a mix of movement, conversation, and public expression. Flags overlap with people and architecture, creating a layered composition in which political symbolism becomes part of the street’s visual landscape. A spontaneous observation of the city’s public life. Photo: Neil Wildin.Beneath the Flags. A crowd gathers beneath the trees of Avenida Paulista as a large flag rises above the people, its movement guiding the eye through the photograph. Faces, raised hands, urban structures, and political symbols occupy the same space, revealing the density and complexity of a public demonstration. The photograph explores the tension between the individual and the collective, capturing a fleeting arrangement within a constantly changing scene. Photo: Neil Wildin.Walking Together. Photographed from behind, participants walk along a busy stretch of Avenida Paulista, wearing clothing printed with striking symbols and designs. The photograph shifts attention from the spectacle of flags and crowds to the small details of identity and personal expression. Everyday movement through public space becomes an observation of how people communicate belonging, interests, and ideas through what they wear. Photo: Neil Wildin.Between Concrete and Voices. Political banners rise above a dense crowd gathered between the glass towers and monumental façades of Avenida Paulista. The photograph contrasts the fixed geometry of São Paulo’s architecture with the mobile, temporary presence of a demonstration. People, flags, and buildings compete for space within the frame, presenting the avenue both as a commercial center and a place of public expression. Photo: Neil Wildin.Above the Demonstration. Two participants stand on an elevated structure in the street, holding flags and a political banner above the surrounding crowd. Their figures stand out against the vertical lines of a modern building, creating a striking contrast between human movement and architectural repetition. The photograph examines the physical gestures people use to make themselves and their messages visible at a public gathering. Photo: Neil Wildin.A Different Perspective. Silhouetted against the brightness of the city, several people occupy the branches of a large tree above the demonstration on Avenida Paulista. Their elevated positions turn the tree into an improvised lookout point as the gathering continues below. The contrast between the dark figures, the shapes of the branches, and the surrounding architecture creates an image about perspective, curiosity, and the human desire to see beyond the crowd.
